Our Story

Once upon a time there were twin brothers growing up in a house in Edinburgh.  The stimulating Scottish weather and many a game of rugby meant that they were perpetually hungry, but they always knew their way to the cake tins in the kitchen on return home from school, where they would find neat squares of shortbread or, if they were lucky, ‘toffee’ shortbread, lovingly made by their mother, Susan.

Although Susan sadly passed away many years ago, the shortbread recipe that she shared with her daughter-in-law, Amanda, has been in constant use for over 30 years and lives on as the inspiration and traditional recipe for Mrs Brown’s Bakes’ shortbread.

Amanda has enjoyed cooking, and particularly baking, since childhood and loves nothing more than giving pleasure to others through food.   After many years of working as PA to the Artistic Director at Marlborough College Amanda, or Mrs Brown as she was often affectionately called, decided it was never too late for a new challenge and Mrs Brown’s Bakes was launched in December 2022, with the invaluable assistance of husband and taster extraordinaire, Andrew and younger son, Rory, who has masterminded the graphic design behind the business.

A selection of Mrs Brown’s Bakes shortbread packets is now available to purchase from St Peter’s Church - Cardinal Coffee Shop (High Street, Marlborough) where you can also enjoy cakes and bakes provided by Mrs Brown’s Bakes alongside a cup of coffee (Monday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm). In addition, for special shortbread/cake orders, Amanda can be contacted by clicking here.
